(Please note that this is not a FGASA accredited course)
This Field (Safari) Guide Programme consists of 28 adventure packed days living in and learning about nature and ecology whilst staying at a wilderness camp. During your stay you will take part in a variety of learning activities whilst driving, walking, boating and also canoeing.
Drives and walks will comprise the backbone of your training activities but any stay on the Zambezi would not be complete without canoeing
and some boating on the river. After all the Zambezi
River is the largest river in the region and any stay on the Zambezi would not be complete without canoeing and some boating on the river – it’s hard to beat drifting peacefully down the river watching hippo and elephant - an experience not to be missed!
Why attend one of these courses…?
Nobody can truly experience Africa's wild places without actually spending time in the wild. That is why all these courses are conducted from simple, rustic bush camps in the middle of great wilderness areas.
Students eat, sleep and breathe the wild African bush. This is an awesome way to have an extremely unique safari experience whether you take it on for the qualification or just for the experience and interest.
Who can do these courses, you ask yourself?
If you are 17 years of age or older (with a driving license, although not essential) and you want to learn more about the bush, we would love to host you at one of our camps. These courses are not only available to people wishing to enter the industry as field guides, but for anyone who wants to increase their knowledge of the African bush. So whether you've just finished school and are on your gap year, or if you've possibly taken a career break or are retired, this course is for you!
People who have attended these courses have returned to the "real world" with a different outlook on life. Some have taken this new outlook into their day-to-day lives and others, inspired by their time with us, have completely changed their lives and careers.
The emphasis is on practical day-to-day experiences in the bush. The daily outings are flexible and may focus on specific subjects such as animal tracks and tracking, birds, plant identification or animal behaviour, or may involve game viewing and learning about the ecosystem in general. Each day allows for hours of time spent in the field interpreting the ecology and enjoying a wildlife experience. Activities alternate between walks and driving. Lecture time follows after brunch, which involves topical instruction (lectures) and discussion on the subject of the day This is followed by time for self study for the students.
Accommodation is in four walk-in safari style tents each having twin beds and en-suite facilities.
Conservation Lower Zambezi sits on the banks of the Zambezi River, adjacent to Lower Zambezi National Park. Across the river on the Zimbabwean side is Mana Pools National Park, a world heritage site. The Lower Zambezi National Park is one of Zambia’s top parks covering over 4000 square kilometres with 120 kilometres of Zambezi River frontage.
It is home to four of the big five amongst a wealth of other wild fauna and flora. Most of your training will be carried out in the Chiawa Game Management Area (GMA) with excursions into the LZNP covered by the 5 days of park entrance fees included in your course fee.
